How To: Create a Character
Fri Jul 01, 2011 3:12 pm
How to: Make a Character
A Step by Step Guide though the Character Creation and Registration Process.
Step 1. Have a read of the [ rules ] and [ member rights ], these are important in giving you a idea of the type of board we are, types of characters allowed and how we roleplay.
Step 2. Decide on what kind of character your interested in playing, have a quick glance over the [ tourist guide ] and [ the factbook ] for inspiration.
It's also the perfect time to have a look around the board and check out our [ database of current characters ] and see if there are any for adoption or the mentioned that catch your eye and a peek at the [ jobs board ] for anything that catches your fancy.
Remember that if you can't find something you like there's no excuse not to create it!
Step 3. Decide on your characters Name, Gender and Race and if they are going to be a full time character or a [ NPC ]
Step 4. Click on the [ Register ] Button on the top menu (in red) and fill in your characters Name, basic details, and your own email/contact details.
Step 5. Check your email, you should have a verification from Wizards Without Boundaries.. not there? Don't forget to check your spam folder in case it's ended up there by accident.
Step 6. Click the link in the email to verify your account
Now you can log in and start filling out your Profile!
Step 7. Click [ Profile ] in the top menu (or sidebar) and fill in as much as you can. You will find prompts to help you on your way and explain some of the tricker elements of what things mean.
To figure out your characters birthdate simply decide how old they are and use [ The Time and date Calculator ] to figure out what year they where born.
Remember to Check your Face Claims/Playby against the [ List and Rules ] to ensure they're suitable.
Don't forget to do a spelling and grammar check, proof reading is also a good habit to get into.
You can save your work any time by pressing Save at the bottom of the page and come back to it later by clicking Profile in the header/sidebar .
If at any time you have any problems drop a note in the chatbox at the bottom of the forum, pm a admin, tweet @wizardswb or email admin@wizardswb.com and we'll be there to help you out.
You will also find answers to many common questions in the FAQ and at the end of this post.
Step 8. Now once you have your profile filled in it's time to apply!
First up you need to copy and paste the application form.
For a Full Character use this form:
Transfer Characters:
If you have a character coming from another site where they have been roleplayed previously, and you wish to keep that history you can use this form:
NPC's
For a NPC that support another character grab the form from the [ NPC Rules ]
Step 9. Fill in the form with your characters details and post it [ here ] with your Characters Name as the Title.
Your Post should look something like:
Step 10. One of our Admin team will check it over to make sure everything is a-okay.
Sometimes we will reply to your application with edits to help get a better sense of your character or ensure that balance and diversity on the board is maintained.
If that happens it's a good idea to have a look at what the Admin's have written and look again at your profile. Usually it's a matter as simple as adding some detail to explain how something came to be or changing a small logical mistake.
If you have a issue with a edit requested consider you can discuss it with the Admin in question (remember to be polite, we are humans!), you may also referred to talk to a different Admin for mediation if there is a disagreement.
Once you feel that your Profile is correct it's a simple matter to reply to your application to let the Admin's know to take a second look.
Usually the whole process is quite short and you'll be set to go in a few minutes but depending on the time of day it could take a bit longer (we all have to sleep sometime )
Adoption Characters requre extra time as your profile needs to be looked over both by Admin and the person who posted the adoption to ensure it meets their needs as well.
Step 11. If everything is well your character will gain a race and nationality badge, be added to the database and you will receive emails saying they've been added to a group.
Congratulations! It's time to start roleplaying!
Common Questions:
What do I register as?
Please register as your characters First and Last Name aka Bruce Bingsley
How Long/Short does my application have to be?
Depending on the field it may range from a couple of lines to paragraphs.
Really we want to know about your character so that other members can have a good sense of them and to help you get off to the best start possible when it comes to roleplaying them.
Fields such as History we expect around 500 words
However likes/dislikes could be a few single words depending on how much detail you want to go into.
Remember the important thing is to give the facts about your character, it's not a effort in how much you can write or the quality of poise, just ensuring that others can get a solid idea of what to write when roleplaying with them.
If your not sure, go ahead and write what you have and submit it. Admins will offer pointers, suggestions and advice to help to allow you to improve and flesh out anything missing.
Remember that you can always save at any time and ask for advice if you're not sure about something. We're here to help after all
What are Faceclaims and how do I claim one?
A Faceclaim is a person chosen to portray your character, in a sense if the world was a stage they would be the best choice of a actor to play them which you claim as part of your application.
You can learn more about Faceclaims, including the rules of using them and a complete list of what Faceclaims are in use right [ here ]
Current Members are able to reserve one Faceclaim for future use and established NPC's may also have Faceclaims.
What are the Patronus, Magical Abilities and Animagus stuff about?
As in the series there are some witches and wizards born or who can learn skills that are above the average wizard or witch. Just as in Canon there was characters who could speak to snakes, change their appearance at will and turn into animals so to do we allow characters to also have abilities.
Because of our all in one application process we have 'special' fields to register such abilities with your character. Note however that Muggle Characters ignore all these fields.
Can I have more then one Character?
Yep! We don't actually have a limit on registering characters except common sense that whatever threads and characters you create you must keep up with.
Help! I can't log in! It's saying the username is invalid
Did you check your email? You should have gotten one with a link to verify your account.
Not there? You're probably using Hotmail or Yahoo... go look in your spam.. there you go!
What kind of characters can I have?
Good question! We take only original characters (so no Ron/Harry Potter/Jack Sparrow etc.etc.) from all ages, nationalities and a range of races including Wizards/Witches, Muggles (that's normal non-magical folks) and creatures including Elves, Werewolves and Vampires etc. To ensure races are balanced and consistent we provide guidelines on how Creatures should be played [ here ]
Student and University age characters have the option to attend one of a range of schools, they can even go on exchange to spend time with students at a different school overseas.
Other types of characters may work in the media allowing them to host their own television station or run their own business. Other's might join a band, take a run at Politics, Run classes as a teacher at one of the schools or follow their own path. Really it's up to you!
So I can just do whatever I want!?
Woa hold up, we do have one big constraint to keep roleplay balanced.. it's called Magical Realism!
This means that we aim to roleplay both the magical and normal world as true to life as possible.. but that doesn't mean boring!
Not only do we find that realism means roleplay can often be surprising for going new directions and lead to much more interesting stories in the long run rather then a world overrun with Hollywood style cliché's.
I've got a idea for a character.. but I don't know what to do with them?
Don't stress, just do all the steps and add to your application that your not sure about such and such.
Admin will offer advice and help you brainstorm ways to make them fit right at home
You mentioned Classes? How do they work?
Classes are organised by Teachers and Students using the The Qualified Teachers Registry.
Available Teachers will advertise their classes, then it's just the students job to contact and request either a one-on-one or group thread.
This means that students and teachers get to roleplay when and how they like without the pressure of scheduled classes.
What happens to my Character's if I don't Roleplay?
In the case of a character being unregistered and never roleplayed accounts are deleted after 2 months (but don't fret we can restore them from backup if you need them).
Character's that haven't been played for over 6 weeks will get a PM from Admin to check in on them.
Usually there's a reason you've been inactive, so just take a moment to reply to the notice and let us know and we'll help you out with the best options and advice.
If you don't post or reply to the pm your account will be frozen and their faceclaim unapproved in 14 days time.
Frozen Account's cannot roleplay and will appear greyed out.
How do I get a Character Back from Deep Freeze?
To unfreeze a character you simply have to update their profile then post to their original application (which you can find [ here ] to request them brought back.
You can also voluntarily ask to Freeze a Character if you are going to be away for awhile or not roleplay them.
We do ask that you tie up any threads and ensure people your roleplaying with are advised of the change beforehand so they have options to adapt their plots and threads to suit.
