This is not One of Those Movies....

Marty stood on his balcony, the suit jacket he wore earlier tossed on the bed, his shirt sleeves rolled up and a glass of wine in hand. He leaned against the balcony entry frame as Dominic explained what it was he had in mind. It had been a few days since the events on the bridge and Marty was still in Paris instead of back in his apartment in New York sending out his C.V. for jobs.
++++++
He knew something strange had happened on that bridge and a few other times as memories surfaced that night. Once he no longer felt queasy, he sat down and pulled out his HTC to do a search only to find it was not quite in the shape it had been when he left the room. Looking over at Victor, who had poured them both a stiff drink, Marty saw him looking a bit awkward. "Spill," was all he said. "I don't care how long it takes but what happened out there?"
Victor thought for a moment and decided the man deserved some honesty so he explained as simply as he could what Michel had attempted to do and what he had successfully done to get Marty out of there as well as why he had not come to Marty's aid sooner. Victor knew that if Dominic was really upset about this, he could have Marty obliviated later, which he did not tell Marty.
By the time Victor finished, Marty was on the netbook he had purchased after he realized he was going to be there more than a few hours and began researching. He first looked up the spell Victor said Michel had tried to use on him. After reading the information, he downed the whiskey in his glass and poured another, hands shaking just a bit as the adrenaline subsided and realization began settling in. From there, he went from one source to another in his typical methodical fashion and when he was done, he had no doubts that all Victor told him had been true and began to very quickly connect many dots that had not connected before. He needed to talk to Fifi, that much he knew for sure.
By the time he knew that there was another 'science' out there there that he had not been aware of, Dominic had arrived, Victor having reported the incident immediately. It was at that time, Dominic asked what had brought on the attack and if Marty knew why Michel would want to have killed him. Marty explained the conversation that had gone on while Victor had been distracted dueling. Dominic's reaction had rather surprised Marty. "You want me to WHAT?" Marty asked in shock. "You want me to go back and work for the woman who just tried to have me killed? If you want me dead, wouldn't it be easier just to do it now?"
Dominic couldn't help but grin at Marty's reaction. Yes, it probably did sound crazy to the American Muggle but there was a plan. This was Dominic, of course he had a plan and he set out the basics of it to Marty. Marty listened, obvious that his mind was going over all the possibilities and had not committed to it but did not reject it. "Dominic, I have questions that I need answers to before I say yes or no. If I'm going to make this decision, I want to make it with as much clear thinking and determination as I can. I'd like a couple of days to consider." Dominic nodded and stood to leave, suggesting Marty get some sleep before trying to figure it out further. At Marty's request for some books that Dominic thought would be helpful, Dominic said there were a few and promised to send them over after lunch.
+++++++
Since then, Marty had been pouring over whatever information he could find, meeting with Dominic occasionally to ask questions and clarify some points and then this afternoon, Dominic had taken him to the Ministry offices and gave him a brief tour with some explanations and demonstrations of some things Marty had specifically requested as they might prove helpful to what was about to happen if Marty agreed. They both knew that this was not one of those movies, as Fifi had said at the airport. People died. Marty almost did once already.
The initial shock of things had subsided, Marty was a bit more knowledgeable about Muggles and spells, charms, floo networks, apparating and owls. He knew he could communicate with them through the floo network but not travel and that yes, he could use owls for communication. He learned the secret of McQueen and her classification of a Squib and that he was a Muggle. Marty had asked Dominic to detail what he needed Marty to do and when he finished, Marty turned back from the balcony and began to tell Dominic what he would like to have if he were to accomplish this.
"If I am going to do this, there's some things that would make the odds a bit more favorable for us," Marty began. "I'm going to go into McQueen with a few demands if she truly wants me back. It's a big gamble but if she agrees, it will make things easier for us. If I can get her to arrange an office for me with both a window and a fire place, can you set up a floo connection with it? Also, I am going to request her to allow me to hire an assistant of my own choosing. It's been an issue before and I suspect she'll give in on that one. I want it to be one of your people." Marty paused and added, "I'm sure you are quite able to create an very Muggle background for one of them. If anything goes wrong and I can't get word to you, they can. If I need to send files, information, whatever, with their ability to apparate and floo and fly, it's a lot faster than depending on the postal systems between the countries." Marty took a sip of his wine while he let Dominic digest his suggestions so far. "And I'll admit, it is a bit of insurance for me. I'm not magical. I can't do a shielding spell or fire back with whatever."
Marty turned back to stare out at the view of Paris at night. "There's one other thing, Dominic," he finally said, his voice quiet and serious. "McQueen is unaware that my parents are still alive and living quietly in New Jersey. She never asked, I never volunteered. We never had the kind of staff relationship where she asked about family and all. I've taken a couple of days over the years for funerals at various times and from the way she spoke on a few occasions, I think she believes they're deceased." Marty paused to take another sip of his wine, a thought striking him. "Come to think of it, I can't think of any staff that I know there that has any kind of family or partner. Seems she likes to keep loners on staff. Anyway, if anything should go wrong, I want you to make sure that they're looked after and kept safe for the time they have left."
With that last request, Marty waited to hear if Dominic would accept them. He watched the older man who never flinched on any request though Marty did notice an eyebrow raise here and there as he detailed each one and explained the reasonings for them. Marty had thought he would be nervous waiting for Dominic's reply and in some ways he was but not like he thought he would be. Over the past few days, Marty had had to come to terms with a lot of things he never considered before. The existence of magic. The realization things were not what he had thought them to be at Smoking Llama for a long time. The ideas of being used by his ex-boss and the events of Halloween night. Now, he finally understood comments Fifi had made to him about 'his kind'.
